Abandoned cart recovery is the process of automatically following up with shoppers who added items to a cart or started checkout but never paid — usually with a timed sequence of emails, texts, WhatsApp messages or retargeting ads that link them straight back to their saved cart. Most stores run it as an always-on automation that fires 1 hour, 24 hours and 72 hours after the cart is abandoned. In the stores we manage, a well-built sequence typically recovers 5–12% of abandoned checkouts, which is usually the cheapest revenue in the account.

What counts as an abandoned cart, and how is it different from an abandoned checkout?

An abandoned cart is when someone adds a product and leaves without starting checkout. An abandoned checkout is when they begin checkout — usually entering an email or phone number — and leave before paying.

The difference matters because of contact data. You can only send an abandoned shopping cart recovery message if you have an email address or phone number, which in most stores means the shopper reached at least step one of checkout or was already logged in.

A third event sits between them: abandoned browse (viewed a product, never added to cart). Browse abandonment emails convert at a lower rate than cart emails, so build cart recovery first.

  • Add-to-cart abandonment — recoverable only if the shopper is identified (logged in, past customer, or captured by a pop-up).
  • Checkout abandonment — the highest-intent group and the one your automation should prioritize.
  • Payment failure — a separate, very high-value flow: the card declined, so one email with a new payment link often recovers it.

Why do people abandon shopping carts in the first place?

Most abandonment is not indecision — it is friction or a surprise at checkout. Fixing the cause usually beats sending more reminders.

The patterns we see most often in ecommerce accounts:

  1. Shipping cost revealed late. A $9.95 shipping fee appearing on the final step kills more carts than any other single factor.
  2. Forced account creation. No guest checkout means a password reset before the first order.
  3. Comparison shopping. The cart is a bookmark; the shopper is checking two other tabs.
  4. Payment method missing. No Shop Pay, PayPal, Apple Pay or Afterpay on mobile.
  5. Slow or broken mobile checkout. Address autocomplete fails, the keyboard covers the field, the page reloads.
  6. Trust gaps. No return policy visible, no reviews, an unfamiliar brand.

Run recovery and checkout repairs in parallel. Our guide to ecommerce conversion rate optimization covers the checkout tests that reduce the number of carts you need to chase.

How does abandoned cart recovery actually work, step by step?

Every platform follows the same five-step logic, whether you use a built-in feature or a dedicated app.

  1. Capture. The platform stores the cart contents and the shopper's email or phone as soon as it is entered — most checkouts save the field on blur, before the shopper clicks continue.
  2. Trigger. A timer starts. If no order is placed within the delay window, the abandonment event fires.
  3. Suppress. The automation checks for a completed order, a duplicate cart, or an unsubscribe, and exits if any are found. This step is what stops you emailing someone who already bought.
  4. Send. Message one goes out with a recovery link that restores the exact cart.
  5. Escalate or exit. If still no order, messages two and three follow on a schedule, often with an added incentive. A purchase at any point ends the flow.

The recovery link is the part people underestimate. It should rebuild the cart with the right variants and quantities and drop the shopper directly on the checkout page, not the homepage.

What should abandoned cart recovery emails say, and when should they send?

Send three emails over three days: a reminder at 1 hour, a reason to act at 24 hours, and a final nudge with an incentive at 72 hours. Keep each one short, show the product image, and make the button go straight to checkout.

A three-email sequence that works

  • Email 1 — 1 hour. No discount. Subject: You left something behind or Your cart is saved. Body: product image, name, price, one button (Return to checkout). Treat it as a service message, not a sales pitch.
  • Email 2 — 20 to 24 hours. Handle the objection. Add the return policy, shipping times, two review quotes and a support link. If shipping is why they left, say what the free-shipping threshold is.
  • Email 3 — 72 hours. Last call, optional incentive. 10% off or free shipping with a 48-hour expiry, plus a line about low stock only if it is true.

Do not discount in email one. You will pay margin to people who were coming back anyway, and repeat shoppers quickly learn to abandon on purpose.

For high-ticket items — anything over roughly $500 — replace email three with a question: Can we answer anything before you order? A reply handled by a person or an AI chatbot on your ecommerce site closes more of those than a coupon does.

How do you set up abandoned cart recovery on Shopify?

Shopify has it built in. Go to Settings → Checkout → Abandoned checkouts, turn on automatic emails, and pick a delay of 1, 6, 10 or 24 hours. That gives you one email; everything beyond that needs the Marketing automations section or an app.

For a multi-step sequence, use Shopify Marketing → Automations and start from the abandoned checkout template, which lets you chain emails with wait steps and conditions. Shopify documents the setup and the available delays in its abandoned checkout help article.

Three settings people miss on Shopify abandoned cart recovery:

  • Turn on marketing consent checkbox at checkout so you can keep emailing these shoppers after the flow ends.
  • Exclude draft and POS orders so wholesale and in-store carts do not trigger consumer emails.
  • Check that the discount code in email three is set to one use per customer, or it will end up on coupon sites.

Which abandoned cart recovery plugins work for WooCommerce?

WooCommerce has no native recovery flow, so you need a plugin. The common choices are Cart Abandonment Recovery by CartFlows (free, simple, email only), FunnelKit Automations (email plus SMS, visual builder), AutomateWoo (official Woo extension, deep order data), and Klaviyo for WooCommerce (strongest segmentation and reporting).

Whichever you pick, verify three things after install:

  1. Email capture timing. The plugin should save the billing email as soon as the field loses focus, not on submit.
  2. Deliverability. Send through a transactional provider (Postmark, SendGrid, Amazon SES) via SMTP, not your host's PHP mail. Hosted WordPress mail lands in spam often enough to flatten results.
  3. Cron reliability. WordPress cron only runs when someone visits the site. On low-traffic stores, switch to a real server cron so the 1-hour email sends at 1 hour.

Are WhatsApp abandoned cart recovery platforms worth it?

WhatsApp works well where it is the default messaging app — Latin America, India, much of Europe and the Middle East — and poorly in most of the US and Canada, where email and SMS still beat it. Platforms in this space include WATI, Interakt, Zoko, Bik and Charles, all built on the WhatsApp Business Platform.

Three rules shape what you can send:

  • You need explicit opt-in to the number before any marketing message.
  • Outbound messages outside a 24-hour conversation window must use a pre-approved template and are billed per conversation, not per message.
  • Marketing template categories cost more than utility ones, and approval can be refused for pushy copy.

For US and Canadian stores, SMS is the better second channel. Texting rules are strict: you need prior express written consent, a clear opt-out, and quiet-hour limits, as outlined by the FCC's guidance on unwanted texts. In Canada, CASL adds its own consent and identification requirements on top.

Which are the best abandoned cart recovery apps?

There is no single best app — the right one depends on your platform, your order volume and whether you need SMS. Here is how the common options compare.

What about Payhip abandoned cart recovery?

Payhip includes an abandoned cart email feature for digital product and course sellers. You enable it in your store settings, and it emails shoppers who entered an email at checkout but did not complete payment. Availability and the number of reminders depend on your plan tier, so check inside your account before you plan a sequence around it.

For digital goods, the recovery email should restate what the buyer gets and how fast — instant download, lifetime access, refund window. There is no shipping objection to handle, so trust and clarity do the work.

What abandoned cart recovery strategies work besides email?

Email is the base layer. The lift comes from stacking two or three channels and from fixing the checkout itself.

  • Retargeting ads. A dynamic product ad showing the exact item in the cart is the strongest paid format for this audience — see how Meta catalog ads are set up.
  • SMS at 4 hours. One short text with the cart link, only to numbers that opted in, with STOP instructions.
  • Exit-intent offer. Catch the email before they leave so you have someone to follow up with at all.
  • Payment-failure flow. Separate from cart recovery and usually the highest converting automation in the account.
  • Free-shipping threshold in the cart. A progress bar showing $12 away from free shipping prevents the abandonment instead of chasing it.
  • Live chat or AI assistant on the checkout page. Answers sizing, delivery and returns questions at the moment of doubt.

Setting up and maintaining these flows is routine automation work. It is the kind of thing our AI automation service at Lead Key Agency builds once and monitors monthly, alongside review requests and booking follow-ups.

How do you measure abandoned cart recovery properly?

Track four numbers, and be honest that attributed revenue is not the same as incremental revenue.

  • Recovery rate: recovered orders ÷ abandoned checkouts. Typically 5–12% with email only in our accounts; 10–20% with email plus SMS on an opted-in list.
  • Revenue per recipient: recovered revenue ÷ emails delivered. Useful for comparing two versions of the same email.
  • Discount cost: total coupon value redeemed through the flow, subtracted from recovered revenue.
  • Incremental lift: measured with a holdout.

To run a holdout, exclude a random 10% of abandoners from the flow for 30 days and compare their natural return-and-buy rate to the treated group. The gap is what the automation actually earned. Most stores find the true number is meaningfully lower than the dashboard figure — still positive, but not the headline.

What are the legal rules for cart recovery messages?

In the US, commercial email must include a working unsubscribe link, a valid physical mailing address, and non-deceptive subject lines, and opt-out requests must be honored within 10 business days under the FTC's CAN-SPAM compliance guide.

In Canada, CASL requires express or implied consent before sending a commercial electronic message, plus clear sender identification and an unsubscribe mechanism. Implied consent from an existing business relationship is time-limited, so do not rely on it for a cold list.

SMS and WhatsApp are stricter than email: get written consent at the point of capture, keep the record, and honor STOP immediately. A checkout checkbox that is pre-ticked does not count as consent in either country.

A realistic rollout plan for the next 30 days

  1. Week 1: Turn on the platform's built-in email at 1 hour. Confirm the recovery link restores the cart on mobile.
  2. Week 2: Add emails two and three with the objection-handling and last-call copy. Set the discount to one use per customer.
  3. Week 3: Add SMS or WhatsApp for opted-in contacts only, one message at 4 hours.
  4. Week 4: Launch catalog retargeting for 7-day cart abandoners and set a 10% holdout so you can measure lift in month two.

If your checkout is the real problem — slow, missing payment options, shipping shown too late — fix that first. Recovery emails applied to a broken checkout just move the abandonment one step later.

Frequently asked questions

How long after someone abandons a cart should the first email send?

One hour is the standard first touch and performs well in most stores because the shopper still remembers the product. Sending at 15–30 minutes can feel intrusive and sometimes catches people who were only pausing to grab a card. If your average order value is over $500, pushing the first email to 2–3 hours usually reads better.

Does abandoned cart recovery work for digital products and courses?

Yes, and it often works better because there is no shipping objection to overcome. Platforms like Payhip, Gumroad and Shopify's digital downloads all support reminder emails tied to an incomplete checkout. Focus the copy on instant access, what is included, and the refund policy rather than on discounts.

Should I always offer a discount in cart recovery emails?

No. Start with no discount in the first email, add an incentive only in the final message, and cap it at 10% or free shipping with a 48-hour expiry. If you discount immediately, you train repeat customers to abandon on purpose and you give margin away to shoppers who would have returned anyway.

Can I email someone who entered their address at checkout but never ticked a marketing box?

In the US, a transactional-style cart reminder to someone who started a purchase is generally treated as permissible, but it still needs a working unsubscribe link and a physical address under CAN-SPAM. In Canada, CASL is stricter and you should rely on express consent or a documented existing business relationship. The safe setup is a clearly worded consent checkbox at checkout.

How many abandoned cart emails is too many?

Three is the practical ceiling for most stores, spread over 72 hours. A fourth message rarely adds measurable revenue and raises unsubscribe and spam-complaint rates, which hurts the deliverability of your other campaigns. If someone ignores three reminders, move them into your normal newsletter segment instead.

Do abandoned cart texts convert better than emails?

Texts are opened faster and usually convert at a higher rate per message, but they reach a much smaller audience because only opted-in numbers qualify, and each message costs money. The best setup is email to everyone plus one SMS at around four hours to the opted-in segment. Measure revenue per recipient on each channel separately rather than comparing open rates.

Why does my store show hundreds of abandoned carts but almost no recovery emails sent?

Almost always because the shopper never got far enough to give you an email address. Add-to-cart events with no identified contact cannot be messaged, so the fix is capturing email earlier — through an exit-intent offer, an accelerated checkout button, or logged-in accounts — rather than changing the email sequence.
