Law Firm Marketing That Brings In Signed Cases

Law firm marketing works when your Google Business Profile, practice-area pages, ads and intake run as one system. Real costs, a 90-day plan and channels compared.

Law firm marketing is the system that gets your firm found (Maps, search, ads, referrals), gets the right people to call, and gets those calls signed. For most firms the money is made in four places: a well-built Google Business Profile, one strong page per practice area, paid search for high-intent terms, and intake that answers in under five minutes. Everything else is support.

This guide covers what each channel realistically costs, how to build a plan, what an agency does, and how to tell whether your spend is working.

What actually brings cases to a law firm?

Case volume comes from three sources: people searching right now, people who were referred and are checking you out, and people who remember you later. Most marketing budgets should sit on the first two.

Someone with a DUI arrest, a car accident, or an eviction notice searches on a phone, scans the top three Maps results, and calls two or three firms. The firm that answers first usually signs the case.

  • Search intent (now): Google Maps, organic practice-area pages, Google Ads, Local Services Ads.
  • Verification (referred): reviews, attorney bios, case results, a website that loads fast and looks like a real firm.
  • Memory (later): email to past clients, social and video, co-counsel relationships, community sponsorships.

If your intake is weak, none of this matters. In the accounts we manage, roughly a third to half of inbound calls to a law firm go unanswered or to voicemail during business hours. That is the cheapest fix available.

How much should a law firm spend on marketing?

A common working range is 5–12% of gross revenue, with consumer practices (personal injury, family, criminal, immigration) at the top and B2B or referral-heavy practices at the bottom. A newer firm trying to grow fast often runs 15% or more for 12–18 months.

The number that matters is not budget percentage — it is cost per signed case against average case value. A family law firm with a $4,500 average fee can pay $600–$900 per signed case and still do well. A PI firm with a $12,000 average settlement fee can pay far more.

Work backward:

  1. Average revenue per signed case.
  2. What you are willing to pay for one (typically 10–20% of case value).
  3. Your lead-to-signed rate (many firms sit at 20–35% on paid channels).
  4. That gives your maximum cost per lead. If PI leads cost $250 and you sign 25%, your cost per case is $1,000.

Which channels work best for law firm digital marketing?

Local search and paid search produce the fastest signed cases for consumer practices. Content and video build slower but lower your cost per case over time. Here is how they compare in practice.

Google Business Profile and local SEO

Your profile is the single highest-leverage asset for a local practice. Categories, service areas, hours, a real local phone number, photos of the actual office, and a steady flow of reviews drive the Maps pack.

Two rules trip up firms: your listing must use a staffed physical address, and individual attorneys can have their own practitioner listings separate from the firm listing. Review the Google guidelines for representing your business before creating multiple listings — duplicates get suspended.

Reviews are the other half. Ask every satisfied client, make it one tap, and never offer anything of value in exchange. Our guide on how to ask for Google reviews the right way covers the scripts and the compliance line.

Google Ads and Local Services Ads

Legal is the most expensive category in Google Ads. In the accounts we manage, personal injury clicks commonly run $80–$300 in large metros; criminal and family typically land at $20–$80; estate planning and immigration often sit under $25.

Local Services Ads sit above regular search ads and charge per lead rather than per click. Legal services providers must pass license and background checks before running them — see Google's Local Services Ads eligibility requirements. Lead prices in legal categories commonly range from $40 to $400 depending on practice area and city.

Run LSAs first because they are cheaper and faster, then layer search ads on your best-margin practice areas. We break the campaign structure down in detail in Google Ads for lawyers.

Practice-area pages and content

One page per practice area per city you actually serve. A page titled "Houston Car Accident Lawyer" with 900–1,500 words, real case results, attorney credentials, FAQs and a clear call to action will outrank a generic "Our Services" page every time.

Blog content works when it answers the questions clients ask before they hire: "how long do I have to file," "what does a DUI cost in Ohio," "do I need a lawyer for an uncontested divorce." Write 15 of those before you write anything about firm news.

Law firm video marketing in New York City and other competitive metros

In markets where a PI click costs $200+, video lowers your blended cost per case by making people choose you before they click. A 60–90 second attorney intro, five 30-second answers to common questions, and two client-result explainers is enough to start.

Run them three places: on the practice-area page (it increases time on page and call rate), as YouTube in-stream ads targeted to your metro, and as Reels/Shorts. Shoot six to ten videos in one half-day session; production in NYC typically runs $1,500–$6,000 for a batch like that.

If you want social running alongside search, our Facebook, Instagram and TikTok ad management handles the creative rotation so the same footage works across channels.

What does a law firm marketing plan look like in the first 90 days?

Fix intake and local presence first, then buy traffic, then build content. Spending on ads before intake works is how firms conclude "marketing doesn't work."

Days 1–30 — foundation

  • Audit call handling: who answers, how fast, what happens after hours.
  • Turn on missed-call text-back and a shared inbox for web forms.
  • Claim and complete the Google Business Profile; add 20+ photos and correct categories.
  • Build a review request process into case closing.
  • Fix site speed and mobile call buttons; add a sticky "Call now" bar.

Days 31–60 — demand capture

  • Apply for Local Services Ads and start at a conservative weekly budget.
  • Launch one search campaign on your most profitable practice area, exact and phrase match only.
  • Build a dedicated landing page per campaign, not the homepage.
  • Set up call tracking with 60-second call conversions.

Days 61–90 — compounding

  • Publish or rewrite your top five practice-area pages.
  • Record the first video batch.
  • Start a monthly email to past clients and referral sources.
  • Review cost per signed case by channel and reallocate.

What should small law firm marketing focus on first?

Solo and two-attorney firms should pick one practice area and one city, and win there before expanding. Spreading $2,500 a month across four practice areas in a metro of three million people produces nothing.

A realistic starting stack for a small firm at $2,000–$4,000 per month total:

  • $0 — Google Business Profile optimization and reviews (your time or included in a plan).
  • $1,200–$2,500 — Local Services Ads, one practice area, weekday hours only.
  • $300–$600 — website fixes and one new practice-area page per month.
  • $100–$300 — call tracking, CRM, automated follow-up.

Skip, for now: billboards, radio, directory listings that charge per month, and any "SEO package" that cannot show you which pages it will write. Many small firms run well on fixed monthly plans rather than percentage-of-spend contracts.

What does a law firm marketing agency do, and what does it cost?

A law firm marketing agency typically handles four things: local search and reviews, paid ads, website and landing pages, and reporting tied to signed cases. Better ones also touch intake, because that is where most of the loss happens.

Pricing in the US and Canada generally falls into these bands:

  • Freelancer or law firm marketing consultant: $1,000–$3,000/month, or $150–$350/hour for strategy only.
  • Small agency, fixed monthly retainer: $2,000–$6,000/month plus ad spend.
  • Full-service law firm marketing company: $6,000–$20,000/month plus ad spend, usually with content and video included.
  • Percentage of ad spend: 10–20%, common above $20,000/month in spend.

At Lead Key Agency we run the Google side — Maps, Ads and organic — as one program rather than three separate line items; you can see how that works on our Google Ads and local search management page.

How do you choose a law firm marketing company?

Ask for proof and ownership, not case studies with the names blacked out. Five questions that separate real firms from resellers:

  1. Who owns the Google Ads account, the website and the call tracking numbers if we leave? (Answer should be: you.)
  2. Show me a live account dashboard, not a PDF report.
  3. What is the contract term and the notice period? (Month-to-month or 90 days is reasonable; 12-month lock-ins are not.)
  4. Who writes the practice-area pages, and will an attorney review them before publishing?
  5. How do you report cost per signed case, not cost per lead?

Watch for conflicts: an agency running two personal injury firms in the same county is bidding against you with your own money. Ask directly.

How do you track whether law firm marketing services are working?

Track cost per signed case by channel, monthly. Everything above it — impressions, clicks, rankings — is diagnostic, not a result.

The minimum tracking setup:

  • A unique call tracking number per channel (LSA, search ads, Maps, organic).
  • Call conversions counted at 60 seconds, not 15 — short calls are usually wrong numbers or solicitors.
  • A field in your case management system for "how did you hear about us," filled at intake, not later.
  • A monthly one-page sheet: leads, consultations, signed cases, spend, cost per case, per channel.

Give each channel a fair window. Paid search can be judged at 60–90 days. Local SEO and content need 6–9 months before the numbers mean anything.

What are the compliance limits on law firm advertising?

State bar rules govern attorney advertising, and they vary. The common threads: no false or misleading claims, no guarantees of results, disclaimers on past results, clear identification of the responsible attorney, and restrictions on direct solicitation of accident victims within set time windows in some states.

Client testimonials are allowed in most states with a disclaimer, but they must be genuine. The FTC endorsement guides apply to law firms the same as any other advertiser — no fabricated reviews, no undisclosed incentives.

Practical rule: have the managing attorney sign off on ad copy, landing page headlines and video scripts once per quarter. It takes an hour and avoids a grievance.

Which law firm marketing strategies pay off first?

Ranked by speed to signed case, for a typical consumer firm:

  1. Answer the phone. Staff or a trained answering service covering evenings and weekends. Criminal and PI calls come at night.
  2. Missed-call text-back within 60 seconds. A simple auto-reply recovers calls you already paid for.
  3. Local Services Ads. Fastest paid channel, pay-per-lead, dispute bad leads weekly.
  4. Google Business Profile plus review velocity. Free traffic that compounds.
  5. One great landing page per campaign. Phone number above the fold, one form, three proof points.
  6. Follow-up sequence. Five touches over 10 days for anyone who inquires but does not book.

Items 2 and 6 are the ones firms skip and the ones with the best math. Automating them with AI follow-up, review and booking automations usually costs less than one extra paid lead per month.

Frequently asked questions

How long does law firm marketing take to show results?

Paid channels like Local Services Ads and Google Search Ads can produce calls within days and should be judged at 60–90 days. Local SEO and Google Business Profile work typically shows movement in 30–90 days, while practice-area content and video usually need 6–9 months to compound. Plan budgets so the fast channels fund the slow ones.

Is SEO or Google Ads better for a law firm?

Ads are better when you need cases this quarter; SEO is better for lowering cost per case over years. Most firms should run both, starting with ads to generate cash flow while practice-area pages and reviews build. If your budget only supports one, start with Local Services Ads because they are pay-per-lead rather than pay-per-click.

Do law firms need a marketing consultant or a full agency?

A consultant makes sense if you have internal staff who can execute and you need strategy, audits and accountability — typically $150–$350 per hour or $1,000–$3,000 per month. An agency makes sense if nobody on your team will build landing pages, write content or manage bids. Many small firms start with a consultant for 90 days, then hire an agency once the plan is clear.

What is a realistic cost per signed case for a personal injury firm?

It varies widely by market, but firms in mid-size US metros commonly pay $1,500–$5,000 per signed PI case across paid channels, and large metros can run higher. The useful benchmark is 10–20% of your average case revenue. If you are above that range after 90 days, the issue is usually intake conversion or keyword quality, not the channel itself.

Can a law firm have more than one Google Business Profile?

Yes — a firm can have one listing per staffed office location, and individual attorneys can have separate practitioner listings under their own names. What is not allowed is duplicate listings for the same office, virtual offices, or listings at addresses where no one works. Violations commonly lead to suspension, which takes weeks to appeal.

What should a law firm website include to convert visitors?

A click-to-call number in the header on mobile, one page per practice area, attorney bios with credentials and photos, real client reviews with the required disclaimer, and a short form asking for name, phone and a one-line description of the matter. Load time under 2.5 seconds on mobile matters more than design. Remove multi-step forms that ask for case details before a human has spoken to the person.

Does video marketing actually bring in cases for law firms?

Video rarely generates direct calls on its own, but it raises conversion on pages and ads where it appears, which lowers blended cost per case. In high-competition metros like New York City, where clicks can exceed $200, that lift matters. Start with a six-to-ten video batch shot in one session rather than committing to a weekly publishing schedule.
